I can't wait to get hold of this book! It reminds me of another title, "Jeremiah Learns to Read" (Scholastic), in which Jeremiah is an elderly farmer who has so many wonderful skills but who has never learned to read. After dreaming about it for a while, he finally decides to go to school. There he counts with the help of his young classmates to learn his letters and, in exchange, teaches them some of his own valuable skills. My daughter loves this book and was very curious about the idea of "an old person going to school," which she hadn't heard of until we read it. The book opened the perfect door for me to talk to her about illiteracy as a problem that affects many people, old and new, in this country and other countries.
