Caroline Irby’s Exhibition: A Child From Everywhere ~ London, UK

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

A Child from Everywhere by Caroline Irby, published by Black Dog Publishing, 2010Photographer Caroline Irby spent one year tracking down a child born in every country in the world  that now resides in the United Kingdom.  She found children from 185 of the world’s 192 nations, photographed and interviewed each one of them. Her  resulting photographic book, A Child from Everywhere, features the children sharing their thoughts on  leaving their countries of origin, their hopes for their new lives in the UK and their observations of cultural differences.

A selection of Irby’s photographs along with a series of short films that she made of her interviews with the children is on exhibit until August 30th at the V&A Museum of Childhood, London, UK. Entry to the museum and exhibit is free.

Stay tuned to PaperTigers as we will have an interview with Caroline in our  upcoming August/September issue and she will also be guest blogging here on our blog!

National Library of Australia acquires the Marcie Muir collection of children’s literature

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

The History of the Hoppers by B. and N. ParkerFrom the National Library of Australia’s June 2010 e-NEWS:

The Library has acquired the vast collection of Marcie Muir, the Australian bibliographer and champion of children’s literature.

The collection was acquired from Muir’s family who wanted the 7600 items to stay together after her death in 2007. They were the result of her lifelong passion – to track down and record every children’s book written by an Australian or about Australia.

To celebrate this acquisition, the Friends of the National Library are holding a ‘White Gloves’ evening to view a selection of treasures from the collection.

PaperTigers was a nominating body for this year’s Astrid Lindgren Memorial award, the world’s largest prize for children’s and young adult literature, so we were definitely looking forward to the award announcement. We got to the seating area early and it turned out that we were sitting right next to Kitty!  It was most exciting to see her reaction when her name was announced. Definitely one of our highlights from the Fair!

Pooja Makhijani’s book Mama’s Saris inspires a tree

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Earlier this week I blogged about an annual event that takes place in Concord, MA, USA: Family Trees: A Celebration of Children’s LiteraturePooja Makhijani left a comment saying “My book – Mama’s Saris – inspired a tree in 2007. It was the best honor my book could have ever received.” She followed up by sending me two photos of the Mama’s Saris tree! Isn’t it beautiful!?

pooja1pooja2

If anyone else has photos of a decorated tree from the event and would like to email them to me, I would love to share them with our readers.

And speaking of photos, don’t forget PaperTigers’ Around the World in 100 Bookshelves project. Send in a photo of your child’s bookshelf and you could win a selection of 5 age-appropriate books to add to your little one’s bookshelf! So far, we have heard from The Philippines, Canada, the UK, US, Sweden and India. We want to see bookshelves from all corners, though, and to hear about the books that inhabit them so next time you have your camera handy, snap a quick bookshelf photo and send it to me at corinne(at)papertigers(dot)org . Hopefully our combined photos will offer a glimpse of a big world made smaller through books and reading. Don’t worry about capturing the whole bookshelf/book collection in the photo. A partial image, along with a reading-related anecdote and/or a few lines describing the bookshelf’s content, should be enough to help us connect across languages and cultures.

For more details on how to submit a photo of your child’s bookshelf, click here.
