The Asian Festival of Children’s Content (AFCC) Trailer

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

PaperTigers is proud to be a co-sponsor of the Asian Festival of Children’s Content (AFCC) which is held annually in Singapore. The 2012 AFCC will take place May 26 – 29 and programme directors Dr. Myra Garces-Bacsal and Dr Nancy Johnson are hard at work ensuring that this year’s programme is as chock-full (perhaps even more so!) as the 2011 programme.  To learn more about what the AFCC is all about, check out this video from the 2011 Festival which features interview clips with Mr. Ramachandran (Executive Director of the NBDCS), award winning authors Chris Cheng and Pooja Makhijani, as well as myself.

UBC Graduate Student Children’s Literature Research Conference ~ April 28, Vancouver, Canada

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

One of the many great people we met at the recent Serendipity conference in Vancouver was Rob Bittner. Rob recently completed his Master of Arts in Children’s Literature at the University of British Columbia, Canada, and is now pursuing his PhD in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies at Simon Fraser University, Canada. His research interests are in gender and queer theory in children’s/YA literature and his MACL thesis was entitled “Queering Christianity: The Journey from Rigid Doctrine to Personal Theologies in a Selection of YA Literature with LGBTQ Content.”  Besides being a full-time student, Rob is on the American Library Association’s Stonewall Book Awards Committee and was co-convenor of the ALA Young Adult Library Services Association’s Student Interest Research Group. He also volunteers his time with the Vancouver Children’s Literature Roundtable (he was author Lisa Yee’s “guardian angel” at Serendipity)  and is co-chair of the upcoming UBC Graduate Students Children’s Literature Research Conference “Stranger in a Strange Land”.

Stranger in a Strange Land” is a one-day children’s literature conference exploring a diverse range of themes in literature and other materials for young people, including visual media and online texts such as blogs and youtube videos. Come join us for an amazing day of celebrating new and innovative research in the field of children’s and young adult literature brought to you from the creative minds of graduate students. The conference also features keynote speakers Sarah Park (St. Catherine University) and Elizabeth Marshall (Simon Fraser University) to talk about issues of transnationalism and fairy tales (though not necessarily together.)

Continental breakfast, coffee, and lunch will be provided and is included in the registration fee ($18 for students/presenters and $35 for non-students.) “Stranger in a Strange Land” will take place on the first floor of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, located in the centre of the beautiful University of British Columbia campus, on April 28th, 2012, from 8:30am to 5pm. More details can be found on our website (http://blogs.ubc.ca/childlitconference2012/) or questions can be directed to ubc.conference2012@gmail.com.
