Mary Hoffman and Rhiannon Lassiter, compilers and editors,
Lines in the Sand
Frances Lincoln, 2003.
ISBN: 0 7112 2282 7

This anthology about war and peace contains poems, short stories and illustrations from 135 contributors from around the world, in response to the recent devastating events in Iraq. The result is a thought-provoking medley of messages fostering peace. A wide range of conflicts are featured: the Gulf War, Northern Ireland, Croatia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Nigeria, the Falklands War, the Spanish Civil War, the two World Wars and many more. Inevitably, this book provides a political platform for many of the contributors, but the final and common message is clearly conveyed: No to war and Yes to peace! The editors (mother and daughter) should be congratulated for compiling with enthusiasm and passion this amazing book in such a short period of time. A very useful resource for the classroom that will surely motivate much discussion. All royalties and profits from the sale of this book will be donated to UNICEF.
