Tanuja Desai Hidier,
Born Confused
Scholastic Press, 2003.
ISBN: 0 439 97862 9

In this captivating and exciting book, teenage Dimple Lala explores what it is to be Indian in America, and the problems and possibilities of friendship, love and cultural diversity. She must navigate her relationships with her doting parents, cousin, best friend Gwyn, and the 'suitable boy' who turns out to be a cool college DJ, rather than the nerd she assumed him to be. A hugely likable and intelligent character, Dimple tries to resolve the classic dilemmas of teenage identity in a rich, multi-layered setting which mingles teen-speak with the vibrant DJ club scene and fascinating glimpses of Indian culture. This book should be in every school library.
