Jean Little,
Exiles from the War: The War Guests Diary of Charlotte Mary Twiss (Dear Canada Series)
Scholastic Canada, 2010.
Rating: E*
In 1940, as Charlotte Twiss turns twelve, her family volunteers to care for a child who has been evacuated to Canada because of the war in Europe. Charlotte chronicles the events of the year in her diary, from the arrival of English siblings Jane and Sam to the fear her family experiences when her older brother’s submarine goes missing.
Exiles from the War will only add to Jean Little’s status as one of Canada’s best-loved children’s writers. Through Charlotte, as in her other Dear Canada books, Little has captured the authentic voice of a preteen girl during both a formative time in her own life and a significant period in history. In addition, the photographs, map, list of British expressions, and carefully-researched historical note included in the back of the book all help make Exiles from the War a great resource for learning about the Canadian home front during the Second World War.
Highly recommended for public and school libraries.
