Reading books about one's own culture or ethnic group helps children have a better understanding of who they are, what they can become, and what contributions they can make to society. The creation of the award in honor of educator Tomás Rivera not only encourages greater production of Mexican American literature but works toward sustaining his vision of stronger individuals and a stronger Hispanic community in the U.S.
