Mix It Up — USA

  What is it?

Mix It Up 'is a project that supports student efforts to identify, question and cross social boundaries within their schools and communities’.

  PaperTigers says...

... Mix It Up is a strong-voiced, upbeat organisation which supports young people in their efforts to break down barriers.

  Tell me more…
  • The project is part of Tolerance.org, a web project of the Southern Poverty Law Center, in the US that is making great strides toward promoting positive change in race relations.
  • Students can send in their writing about their own views and experiences for publication on the Mix It Up pages.
  • The big annual event is the National 'Mix It Up At Lunch' Day – in 2005 more than 6 million students took part and it is hoped there will be even more this year on 14 November.
  • The event is organized by groups of students committed to challenging the social boundaries in their schools.  They decide how to carry it through and get support for the day.
  • The site provides resources to download for the day such as posters and stickers; and there are ideas for how to keep the momentum going after the event – as well as Ten Steps to Take Action for those who have never done anything like this before.
  • Mix It Up Dialogues provides a forum within schools for constructive discussion in small groups, as a springboard for action in creating and sustaining an inclusive and accepting environment.
  • Grants of $500 are available to help get individual initiatives off the ground: summaries of projects funded to date can be perused for inspiration.
  • Subscribers receive a e-newsletter with news about the project in different schools, and a calendar of events.
