 The Milestones Project - U.S.A

  What is it?

The Milestones Project is a 'photographic tribute to our shared humanity': photographs of children from all over the world, recorded having parallel experiences, regardless of color or creed, so that children can point and say, "Look! Just like me!"

  PaperTigers says...

This is a project that can only grow and grow in sending out its powerful message for tolerance and peace to overcome fear and war, through pictures of children which can be universally read, regardless of language and nationality.

  Tell me more…
  • The project is the baby of Dr Richard and Michele Steckel, who have travelled the world photographing thousands of children.
  • Since the start of the project in 1998, they have taken more than 23,000 photographs, some of which can be seen on their website and in their book The Milestones Project (Tricycle Press, 2004). Contributors to the book's commentaries range from four-year-old children to such well-known children's writers as Eric Carle, Mem Fox, Margaret Mahy, Oscar Misle, Marisa Montes and J.K. Rowling.
  • The project team includes anthropologists and Parent Advocates.
  • In 2005 Richard and Michele Steckel were awarded the Ambassador of Peace Award by The Conflict Center.
  • A Milestones Project Exhibition of photographs is currently travelling the world.
  • The project divides children's milestones into 19 unofficial categories, including first and lost teeth, haircuts, pets, shoes, school, friends...
  • The website is ongoing and will soon include a contributors' gallery.
  • There is a simple but expedient four-statement pledge valid for both children and parents... indeed, for all of humanity.
