Back to Country: U.S.A. | Type: Award
Lee & Low New Voices Award — USA

  What is it?

New Voices Award is an annual award given to a first children's picture book by a writer of color.

  PaperTigers says...

... Award-winning publisher of multicultural books for children, Lee & Low's concerted effort to introduce new voices of color to readers is commendable. By seeking out and publishing stories by previously unpublished authors, they bring to the public's attention a wealth of important, underrepresented narratives.

  Tell me more…
  • Established in 2000, the award is given annually to a first children’s picture book story by a writer of color.
  • The contest is open to writers of color who are residents of the U.S. and who have not previously had a children’s picture book published.
  • Manuscripts should address the needs of children of color by providing stories with which they can identify and relate, and which promote a greater understanding of one another.
  • Submissions may be fiction or nonfiction, for children ages 5 to 12. Folklore and animal stories will not be considered.
  • The award winner will receive a cash grant of $1000 and Lee & Low's standard publication contract, including standard advance and royalties. An honor award winner will receive a cash grant of $500.
  • Manuscripts are accepted from May through October and award and honor award winners are announced in December.
