Established in 1953 by the Jane Addams Peace Association, the Jane Addams Book Awards "recognize children's books that most effectively promote the cause of peace, social justice and world community".

… named after the first woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, in 1931, these awards are a crucial recognition of the role books play in fostering world peace.

• The Jane Addams Peace Association was founded in 1948 "to foster a better understanding between the people of the world toward the end that wars may be avoided and a more lasting peace enjoyed".
• The awards are presented and administered by the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) & the Jane Addams Peace Association.
• Prize categories are: Best Children’s Book and Best Children’s Picture Book.
• Eligible books may be fiction, poetry or nonfiction. Translated works are eligible, provided they were published in the US during the preceding year.
• A national committee of WILPF members concerned with children's and young adult books and their social values is responsible for choosing the winners.
• Award winners are announced on April 28th, the anniversary of the founding of the WILPF. An awards presentation of a certificate and cash, open to all interested people, is held each fall, in New York.
