Back to Country: U.S.A. Canada | Type: Award
Institute for Global Environmental Strategies' Art Contest — USA / Canada

  What is it?

An annual art competition for children in Grades 2-4 with an environmental theme.

  PaperTigers says...

... This is a great springboard for young children to find out about the environment and express their concerns and awareness.

  Tell me more…
  • The competition sets a different Earth Science theme each year and requires young people to do some research then express what they have learned through art.
  • Children are asked to engage with the themes, either through research (‘Earth Explorers: Past, Present, and Future’ – 2003; ‘Climate Zones and Living Things’ - 2000) or indeed their own aspirations (‘Picture Me! What Kind of Earth Scientist Would I be?’ – 2004).
  • The theme for 2006 was ‘Polar Exploration: Going to Extremes’, in the run up to 2007-09’s designation as International Polar Year(s).
  • Accompanying the 2006 page is a great resource page exploring the Polar Regions for kids, parents and educators – suggesting a way in to the competition as a class activity and of interest also to older kids.
  • The judging panel is made up of artists, scientist and IGES staff.
  • All entries receive a certificate; First Second and Third Prize winners receive savings bonds.  The winning entry is also featured on the IGES holiday card.
