The Giant Step Award is given annually to a school library or the youth section of a public library in the U.S.A. or Canada which, over the previous three yearshas 'made a real difference in their institution'. |

- The Award, given annually, is open to any library or media centre for young people in the U.S.A. or Canada which can show that it has taken a 'giant step' in the services it offers and the contribution it has made to the community it serves.
- It is awarded jointly by Thomson Gale and the School Library Journal.
- There are cash prizes of $10,000 to be won.
- Closing date for entries is mid February.
- The judging panel consists of three judges from school library media programs, three from youth services departments in public libraries and one Thomson Gale curriculum specialist; they may visit libraries to help them come to a decision.
