  What is it?

Colorín Colorado.org is a free, web-based service that provides information, activities and advice for educators and Spanish-speaking families of English language learners.

  PaperTigers says...

.... This website is a winner all round. By helping to establish a crucial link between home and school, it empowers parents to take an active role in their child's education and helps teachers address the challenges faced by Latino ELLs with regards to building literacy. Another reason this resource stands out is that it's done in an 'easy-to-use-and-understand' way for both parties, in and beyond the classroom: something lacking in some other web resources attempting the same goal.

  Tell me more…
  • The website was originally developed in 2003 by Reading Rockets for Spanish-speaking parents, building on the success of the Reading Rockets literacy project (an award-winning public television professional development program on which Colorín Colorado is modeled). In 2005, supported by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), it launched its Educators' Section.
  • Their main audience is parents and educators of ELL students, particularly those at the PreK-3 grade levels.
  • The project's main goal is to focus on ways that Spanish-speaking parents can take an active role in the education of their children and to provide research-based and best-practice information and strategies for teaching English language learners.
  • The information in the Parents' Section is fully bilingual. For families that do not have access to the Internet, educators can easily print and distribute the site’s many handouts.
  • Future features include developing the project to include other languages, in addition to Spanish and English.
  • They publish a monthly e-newsletter for educators in English, and a bi-monthly e-newsletter for parents in Spanish.
  • Perks include lists of suggested reading, downloadable video or audio podcasts of authors' interviews, and Caldecott award-winning David Diaz's illustrations throughout the site and in the free e-card – that you can use to let friends know about this wonderful resource.
  • Curious about the site's name? Visit and find out!
