Claudia Lewis Poetry Award — USA

  What is it?

The Claudia Lewis Award is awarded annually by The Children's Book Committee at Bank Street College of Education, New York for the best poetry book for young readers.

PaperTigers says... ...The Children’s Book Committee at Bank Street College has long been a torch bearer for seeking out good books for young people and it is great to see an award that will sometimes give recognition to two deserving poetry books, rather than come down to impossible choices.

  Tell me more…
  • The award has been given annually since 1997.
  • The late Claudia Lewis was a much-loved member of the Bank Street College faculty and The Children's Book Committee and was herself a poet and author.
  • Past winners include Here in Harlem: poems in many voices by Walter Dean Myers; Little Dog and Duncan by Kristine O'Connell George, illustrated by June Otani; and  The Way a Door Closes by Hope Anita Smith, illustrated by Shane W. Evans .
  • The award-winning books are chosen from among those short-listed for inclusion in the Children’s Book Committee’s annual publication, The Best Children’s Books of the Year.
