- The award has been given annually since 1997.
- The late Claudia Lewis was a much-loved member of the Bank Street College faculty and The Children's Book Committee and was herself a poet and author.
- Past winners include Here in Harlem: poems in many voices by Walter Dean Myers; Little Dog and Duncan by Kristine O'Connell George, illustrated by June Otani; and The Way a Door Closes by Hope Anita Smith, illustrated by Shane W. Evans .
- The award-winning books are chosen from among those short-listed for inclusion in the Children’s Book Committee’s annual publication, The Best Children’s Books of the Year.
