  What is it?

AskAsia.org is an online resource for teachers, students and children to learn about all aspects of Asia and Asia in its global context..

  PaperTigers says...

... There is a fabulous wealth of information here for both teachers and students on every aspect of Asia's history, culture and geography.

  Tell me more…
  • The website was set up by the Asia Society, which was founded in 1956 by John D. Rockerfeller 3rd as "an international organization dedicated to strengthening relationships and deepening understanding among the peoples of Asia and the United States".
  • The resources for teachers include essays and
complete lesson plans which are ready to use, with
clear instructions for the preparation of accompanying resources. There is also a bank of, to date, 630 images; and a large collection of both political and elevation maps, dating for the most part from 1999, as well as some earlier larger scale examples, such as the c.1900 Complete map of the Mountain Retreat for Escaping Summer's Heat or the Map of the Detached Imperial Residence on the West Lake ( c.1770).
  • All the teacher resources can be searched according to the relevant student age-groups, period of history or geographical area.
  • The pages for students include language games and puzzles; culture pages with interviews from the world of cinema and the performing arts; book and exhibition reviews - including these breathtaking Japanese screens, some of which recount episodes in well-known stories. Global issues in an Asian context are highlighted and there are links to the National Geographic's attractive MapMachine for images of the Natural World, History, People and Religion.
  • For kids there are puzzles, games and stories as well as exploration of different Asian art forms, such as the Mandala.
