Américas Award — USA

  What is it?

The Américas Award for Children's and Young Adult Literature is presented annually in recognition of "U.S. works
of fiction, poetry, folklore, or selected nonfiction published in English or Spanish that authentically and engagingly relate to Latin America, the Caribbean, or Latinos in the United States".

  PaperTigers says...

...The creation of the Américas Award in 1993 was a very meaningful initiative that has been helping bridge the gap between the Americas and promote multicultural awareness by focusing on cultural heritages within the hemisphere. Its effort to reach beyond geographic borders can only be applauded!

  Tell me more…
  • The award is presented by the Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs (CLASP).
  • The award winners and commended titles are
selected for their distinctive literary quality; cultural contextualization; exceptional integration of text, illustration and design; and potential for classroom use.
  • Award ceremony takes place during the spring at the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are necessary.
  • Previous winning titles include Just a Minute, The Composition, A Movie in My Pillow, and Breaking Through, all written and illustrated by Pacific Rim talents.
