S.E.A Write Award — International

  What is it?

The S.E.A. Write Award, or South Asian Writers Award, is an award for Southeast Asian poets and writers.

  PaperTigers says...

.... Besides encouraging literary excellence, the award brings to the forefront the creative literary talents in and of the region.

  Tell me more…
  • Established in 1979 by the management of The Oriental Bangkok Hotel and funded by Thai Airways International and other companies, the award is presented annually to a writer from each of the countries that comprises the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), although not all countries are represented every year.
  • Eligible writers must be from and reside in Southeast Asia.
  • Eligible works include: poetry, short stories, plays, folktales and scholarly texts.
  • An Award ceremony is held at The Oriental Hotel in Bangkok, and is presided over by a member of the Thai royal family.
  • Winners receive a monetary prize, a plaque and a one-week, all expenses paid vacation in one of the ASEAN countries.
  • The award does not have a separate category for children's books but for the first time, one of the 2006 awards was given to a children's book: The Happiness of Kati, by Thai author Jane Vejjajiva.
