  International Children's Digital Library

  What is it?

The International Children's Digital Library (ICDL) is a comprehensive library of international children's literature available online to children ages 3-13 across the globe.

  PaperTigers says...

… If you are looking for the best international children's literature online, available in many laguages, you should bookmark this site and check it frequently. ICDL's rapidly growing collection helps deliver the internet's promise of providing global access to quality content, and is sure to open and inspire young minds everywhere.

  Tell me more…
  • Online since November 2002, ICDL is currently being built in the United States by the University of Maryland's Human-Computer Interaction Lab, a leader in children's interface design.
  • The collection includes books selected and digitized by the Library of Congress as well as books chosen by international librarians, and is supported by several other organizations.
  • By providing a large-scale digital archive of literature for children ages 3-13, ICDL's aim is to share the benefits of a well-stocked library on a global scale.
  • Digital books are currently available in 34 languages (as of Feb. 2006) and searching tool language options include Arabic, Filipino/Tagalog, Hebrew, Persian/Farsi, Portuguese and Spanish, etc.
  • When completed, the collection of "100 books from 100 cultures" will reflect the diversity and quality of children's literature from around the world and will most likely qualify as the largest "bookmobile" in history.
  • ICDL works with "ambassadors" from all over the world, who volunteer and contribute in many ways. To learn how you can participate in the ICDL project through your library, school, university, or other service, make sure you check their website.
