- The essay competition has been running annually since 2000 and attracts entries from all over the world.
- Entries are divided into two categories: up to 14 and 15-25.
- There is a set theme for each year, with questions and tasks to follow up on for each age group. The theme for 2006 is: Learning to live together: promoting tolerance and diversity in globalized societies.
- Essays may be written in English, Spanish, German or French.
- The deadline for entries is the end of June and the winners are announced in November.
- First-prize winners are invited to the award ceremony in Tokyo.
- The Goi Peace Foundation, established in Tokyo, Japan in 1999, seeks to promote a culture of peace at both an individual and an international level, and in all fields: education, science, culture and the arts.
- It is UNESCO's partner for the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World (2001-2010).
