  Children's Book Trust - India

  What is it?

The organization was initially set up to publish "good quality at a subsidized price" children's books, in order to encourage reading among Indian children. Its activities have subsequently expanded and currently include courses and workshops, competitions, a dolls museum, and a library.

  PaperTigers says...

The Trust was a pioneer in children's book publishing, not only in English and Hindi, but also in several regional languages …

  Tell me more…
  • The Trust was founded by Indian cartoonist and writer K. Shankar Pillai in 1957;
  • The (lending) Library has a collection of 35,000 volumes and organizes summer activities for its young members;
  • Children's World is the Trust's monthly magazine, with stories, poems, comics, puzzles and book reviews.
  • The yearly Shankar's International Children's Competition invites children from all over the world to submit paintings and writings. The international jury awards several medals, and the winners are published in a special volume;
  • The Shankar's Academy for Art and Book Publishing has been set up by the Trust in memory of its founder, and aims at training book publishing professionals. It currently administers a course in art, book illustration and graphics;
  • Shankar's Centre for Children, currently under construction, will house all the Book Trust's collections and activities, and will include facilities for lodging young visitors from India and abroad.
