What
is it? |
The organization was initially set up to publish "good quality
at a subsidized price" children's books, in order to encourage
reading among Indian children. Its activities have subsequently
expanded and currently include courses and workshops, competitions,
a dolls museum, and a library.

- The Trust was founded by Indian cartoonist and writer K. Shankar
Pillai in 1957;
- The (lending) Library has a collection of 35,000 volumes
and organizes summer activities for its young members;
- Children's World is the Trust's monthly magazine, with
stories, poems, comics, puzzles and book reviews.
- The yearly Shankar's International Children's Competition
invites children from all over the world to submit paintings
and writings. The international jury awards several medals,
and the winners are published in a special volume;
- The Shankar's Academy for Art and Book Publishing has
been set up by the Trust in memory of its founder, and aims
at training book publishing professionals. It currently administers
a course in art, book illustration and graphics;
- Shankar's Centre for Children, currently under construction,
will house all the Book Trust's collections and activities,
and will include facilities for lodging young visitors from
India and abroad.
