What
is it? |
World Literacy of Canada supports community-based education programmes both in Canada and in South Asia: in particular, adult literacy and non-formal education for both adults and children. |

PaperTigers
says... |
World Literacy of Canada raises awareness of just how important literacy is in terms of international development: and by focussing on issues close to home as well as abroad, also forges cross-cultural links and understanding. |

|
- World Literacy of Canada (WLC) has been promoting literacy in Canada since 1955 and has been actively involved in many natonal literacy campaigns.
- WLC works in partnership with organisations in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka on literacy and health education projects in communities and schools, providing teachers and practical assistance, such as minibuses and building construction.
- They publish an annual magazine, the bilingual English / Hindi Akshar, which means 'letters' in Hindi.
- in 1999, they launched Kids' Kama, which organizes two story-telling events a year.
- They organise an annual children'scompetition, the poignantly entitled 'Write to Read'. Its priority is to encourage even reluctant writers to pick up a pen and write. The theme for 2005 was to record an episode of their family's oral history.
