  Making Multicultural Australia — Australia

  What is it?

Making Multicultural Australia is a website for teachers, students and parents interested in finding quality resources on multiculturalism and in exploring new ways to learn about and promote cultural diversity and tolerance.

  PaperTigers says...

It provides crucial and valuable information on the contributions that different cultural groups have made to the development of Australian society, and on the various views towards immigration and multiculturalism.

  Tell me more…
  • The website has been jointly developed by the NSW Department of Education and Training and the NSW Office of the Board of Studies in Australia.
  • The site includes a timeline history of multicultural Australia, lesson plans for teachers by subject and learning stage, and student quizzes. It also offers a library of documents, videos, images, as well as a growing collection of 'downloadable' files for classroom presentations.
  • In the great section "Hot Words A-Z" one can find words and phrases that appear in articles and headlines in the Australian news media almost every day. Because some of these words are often misused, the site 'hotlinks' them to proper definitions, to help students understand them better. Words selected include: Alien, Anti-discrimination, Asian, Assimilation, etc.
  • Triple CD-rom package of the same name is another great resource to support curricula across Australia.
  • These rich educational resources bring issues of cultural diversity, conflict and tolerance into the classroom, in a way that engages young people.
