- The award is given by Australia’s The Wilderness Society http://www.wilderness.org.au/ (TWS), a not-for-profit organisation established in 1976 both to educate and to protect and restore Australia’s wilderness areas.
- It was first awarded in 1994.
- Two overall winners are selected from the different categories: Fiction and Non-fiction Picture Books, Non-fiction, and Secondary readers.
- TWS presents trophies and certificates to the winners.
- TWS seeks donors to fund and promote the prize.
- Entries for the year close on 31 January and the winners are announced to coincide.
