Students' feedback about illustrator Maya Gonzalez's visit to the 4th grade classroom at Stuart Hall for Boys, in San Francisco:

What was your favorite part of the presentation?

Michael: I liked when we drew pictures of ourselves.

Andrew: When we got to "feel" the paint palette.

Matthew: When she told us there is no right or wrong way to make art.

Clayton: Knowing who and what her favorite artists and paintings are.

Kevin: My favorite things was when she showed us her doodles.

Nick: Looking at her sketchbook.

Kevin: I loved when we got to draw self-portraits in our notebooks, touching our faces to feel how we were going to draw it.

Owen: I loved the three rules!

Robbie: My favorite part was when she showed us the animals she drew for one of her books.

What did you learn today that you didn’t already know?

David: I learned that anyone can be an artist.

Kevin: I learned why frescoes were so hard to paint.

Tom: That art is a lot bigger than I thought.

Matthew: There is no cheating in art. No right or wrong.

Clayton: Art is always an act of courage.

Jamie: I learned that everyone is an artist.

Nick: I learned that if you take your time, you can do amazing drawings.

Luke: I learned a different way to draw.

Max: I learned that she has illustrated 20 books!

Duncan: I learned being an artist is a lot harder than it looks.

Robbie: I learned that to be an artist can be very fun.

Spencer: I realized that I am an artist, too!

What do you like best about Maya’s illustrations?

David: I like how they're only her creations; nobody can make the same things.

Andrew: I like how she blends her paints.

Angelo: I liked her book My Colors, My World.

Matthew: When she showed us the tracing she did for a book and said it wasn't cheating because there's no cheating in art.

Clayton: Her style is different from any other artists' I know.

Spencer: She uses her imagination a lot.

Nick: I like that there is a mixture between abstract and realistic images.

Blake: I like the faces in her books.

Ben: I like that she puts a ton of detail into them.

Maya’s feedback:

I was impressed with the boy's journals and how full of drawings they
were. There was a lot of creative energy and, clearly, a
curiosity about materials and techniques that I found unique.
I had a fabulous time and seriously enjoyed the portraits they made of
themselves, at the end. Thanks for inviting me to Stuart Hall!
