- Established in 1999, the awards seek to honor the contributions made to literary excellence by authors within the Latino community anywhere in the English and Spanish Speaking World.
- The Awards are co-sponsored and presented by the non-profit organization Latino Literacy Now, which seeks to promote literacy, culture and education within the Latino community and which hosts the annual Latino Book & Family Festival.
- In the Children and Young Adult Book Category there are awards for best Educational Children's Book and Best Picture Book (Spanish, English and bilingual); and Best Young Adult Fiction and Non-Fiction (Spanish and English).
- Winners are presented in May, in conjunction with the 2006 BookExpoAmerica.
- Winners for 2006 include Freaky Foods From Around the World by Ramona Morena and I am René, the Boy / Soy René, Él Niño by
René Colato Lainez, illustrated by Fabiola Graullera Ramírez. Isabel Allende won both the English and Spanish Best Young Adult Fiction Awards for Forest of the Pygmies / El Bosque de los Pigmeos.
