Voice From Afar:
Poems of Peace
by Tony Johnston, illustrated by Susan Guevara (Holiday House, 2008)

Every so often a book comes along that you know will stay with you forever. Voice from Afar: Poems for Peace is one such book. Each poem in this heart-breaking, heart-warming collection provides an experience which resonates far beyond the essence of its words...
Young readers will be deeply affected by this collection not only because so many of the poems involve children, but also because they will feel its message passionately: "Broken child in a broken land,/ I dream you a safe shore." ... While specific events depicted may be haunting and terrible, the overall message, from every direction, is indeed one of peace.

Nov 15 - Dec 15 2008
As we approach the holiday season and the end of another year, we take a moment to focus on the themes of war, peace and social justice in relation to children's books. How can we help children to cope with the divisiveness and contradictions at play in the world today? And how can we help them to feel that they have the power to change things for the better?... At no other time in recent history have these themes been more relevant or their challenges more urgent than they are now.
We also take this moment to thank all our readers for their support, and to renew our commitment to promoting peace and understanding--within and across cultures--through children's books.
