Born in Xalapa, Mexico in 1968, Yuyi Morales spent the first twenty-five in her native land, where early on she took interest in drawing and sports. As an adolescent, she showed promise as a competitive swimmer and enrolled at the University of Xalapa, where she earned bachelor degrees in Physical Education and Psychology. She moved to the United States in 1995 with her husband and son and started experimenting with puppet making. In 1997 she created a weekly children’s radio program for the KPOO station of San Francisco. Drawing from the legends and myths of Latin America, the show ran for three years, during which time she began writing and illustrating her own children’s stories. In June 2000 she was awarded the Don Freeman Memorial Grant-In-Aid by the SCBWI, for her work in illustration. Three years later her first book Harvesting Hope: The Story of Cesar Chavez, written by Kathleen Krull (Harcourt), was praised as one of the best books of 2003 by Child magazine, School Library Journal, and Booklist. Yuyi Morales is also the author and illustrator of Just a Minute: A Trickster Tale and Counting Book (Chronicle Books), winner of the 2004 Pura Belpre Award, the Américas Book Award, and the Tomás Rivera Award among others. Her most recent books include the ALA Notable Los Gatos Black on Halloween , written by Marisa Montes (Henry Holt & Co.), and her highly acclaimed Little Night (Roaring Brook Press). Yuyi Morales lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and son. For more information visit her website.
