"Little Night: See Me Shine" by Yuyi Morales* (read Morales' words about this snowflake below)

Illustration #8 of 8

* "My snowflake is a music box. On top, the character from my book Little Night turns on the snowflake as a broken tune plays. I created this piece by sculpting the child, painting her dark like a winter night, and dressing her in white-snow crocheted hat and pants. The music box I put together with wood and a musical mechanism that I modified by breaking some of the teeth off its steel comb so that it plays a tumbling of notes.

My snowflake, like my book Little Night, is a humble tribute to mothers (and their children) dealing with cancer and poverty. In Mexico, where I come from, Señora Maria de los Angeles and Señora Asunción are two of these mothers fighting everyday for dignity and life, so that they can see their children dream, laugh, hope, imagine, love, and shine."
