Gene Yang has been cartooning professionally since 1996. He began publishing comic books under the name Humble Comics and In 1997 received the 'Xeric Grant' for Gordon Yamamoto and the King of the Geeks. He has taught at a Catholic high school in Oakland, California and is currently serving as the school's Director of Information Services. His most recent work, American Born Chinese (First Second Books, 2006) was the first graphic novel to receive a National Book Award nomination and the first graphic novel to win the American Library Association's Printz Award. The website Comics in Education explores the educational potential of the comics medium, and includes Factoring with Mr. Yang, the project he carried out for his Masters of Education degree.
