California illustrator Don Petersen began drawing at an early age, enthusiastically sketching dinosaurs but sometimes confusing their names. Frequent camping and hiking trips with his family inspired a love of nature, which, along with a playful sense of humor, continues to influence his artwork. Don studied Painting at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Illustration at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. He is a cartoonist, advertising artist and graphic designer, and his work has illustrated dozens of textbooks, including many for students of English as a second language. Illustrating for children's publications such as "TIME for Kids" and National Wildlife Federation's "Your Big Backyard" has given Don the opportunity to draw and paint animals in their environmenta favorite subject. Recently he was called upon to draw everything from guinea pigs to water buffalos for Heifer International, a charitable organization which provides animals to needy families worldwide. He is currently considering picture book ideas. Don's favorite media are watercolor, colored pencil and ink. He lives with his family in the San Francisco Bay area.
