Belle Yang is the author and illustrator of many books for children and adults. Her children's books include: Hannah is My Name (Candlewick Press, 2004), the first in a series of immigrant stories especially close to her own, and
Chili-Chili-Chin-Chin (Silver Wistle, 1999), about a friendship between a donkey and his boy.
Belle is curently working on Always Come Home to Me, a family tale of love and loyalty, to be published by Candlewick Press in the spring of 2007.
Born in Taiwan in 1960, Belle Yang spent part of her childhood in Japan. At age seven she emigrated to the United States with her family. After attending Stirling University in Scotland and graduating from the University of California, Santa Cruz in biology, she went on to study art at the Pasadena Art Center College of Design, and the Beijing Institute of Traditional Chinese Painting.
She returned from China to Carmel, California in late 1989, after the Tiananmen Massacre.
in her introduction to Baba: A Return to China Upon My Father's Shoulders (Harvest Books, 1996) she writes:
"I returned with gratitude in my heart for the freedom of expression given me in America. I returned convinced that I would firmly grasp this gift with both hands."
